Where to go on SLU campus if there’s another power outage

Hammond, LA (March 22, 2023) With previous events at Southeastern Louisiana University, students on campus could not access Wi-Fi for assignments or Grubhub. Thankfully, there’s a place on campus that has free Wi-Fi that has no correlation to SLU database.

This place is St Albert Catholic Student Center, 409 W Dakota St, Hammond, LA 70401. It is opened from Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This center is open for all students, even if they're not from a Catholic background or apart from the Catholic Student Association.

The Catholic Student Center looks out for the students of Southeastern, providing Wi-Fi is just one example. This center has a recreation room for students only, a Lion’s Den and a counseling service office all on the first floor. The second floor has a quiet study/library, a lunchroom that has a “Starving Student fridge” for those on campus with no access to other meals. Both floors include free Wi-Fi just for students.

Taylor Marceaux Bougere, Assistant Director and Campus Minster of St. Albert Catholic Student Center, expresses the growth of the community due to the outage.

“We definitely saw our CSA (Catholic Student Association) members a lot more since they were doing the majority of their work here, and we were able to see some newer faces that came to use our facilities too!” she said.

The center allows everyone to visit and join despite religious beliefs,“ Our goal first and foremost is to meet everyone who walks in our doors with love and respect. Everyone is welcome regardless of their religious beliefs.” Bougere said.

There is so much more to this center that allows students to have a stress-free time. “Our center offers students a place close enough to campus to fit their needs, but just enough separation to take a break when needed and also offers them the opportunities to do homework, print, have a snack or meal, have quiet time, play a game, go to Mass, meet new people, etc!” she stated.

There are specific days when the center would host different events every day of the week. Some days have more than one event, and it would repeat continuously unless something major occurred, and it would be postponed to the following.

Jennifer Sandoval, Music Education major at Southeastern, shares her thoughts about the center and using the source's available.

During the outage, Sandoval was not able to go anywhere due to no Wi-Fi to research places,“ I actually didn't go anywhere, I wasn't sure where to turn to. At the time, all of my friends had gone home for the weekend, so I couldn't ask them for a ride to a public place to get some Wi-Fi.” she stated.

“I ran into an acquaintance who was heading that way, she just told me that they were going to go do some work. It wasn't fully known to me that they had food for students during the week.” Sandoval said.

The Center has made an impact on Jennifer, even though she only visited once and will continue to visit.

“Yes, I would have gone if I knew fully about its services. Even now, where things are somewhat back to normal, it does interest me to pay a visit.” she said.
